हिन्दी अनुवाद – एक बार एक लकड़हारा था जो गाँव में रहता था। वह बहुत ईमानदार आदमी था। एक बार वह अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से लकड़ी काट रहा था। उस दिन बहुत गर्मी थी। उसे प्यास लगी और वह नदी पर पानी पीने गया। उसके हाथ से कुल्हाड़ी फिसल गयी और नदी में गिर गयी। लकड़हारा रोने लगा।

हिन्दी अनुवाद – (नदी की देवी ने उसका रोना सुना और उस पर दया आ गई। वो पानी से बाहर आ गईं।)
देवी : तुम क्यों रो रहे हो?
लकड़हारा : मेरी कुल्हाड़ी नदी में गिर गयी है। अब मैं क्या करूँगा? मैं अपने परिवार के लिए कैसे कमाऊँगा? (नदी की देवी पानी में गईं और सोने की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर आईं।)
देवी : क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?
लकड़हारा : नहीं! नहीं! यह सोने की कुल्हाड़ी है परन्तु मेरी कुल्हाड़ी तो लोहे की है। (नदी की देवी दोबारा पानी में गई और वह एक चाँदी की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर आईं।)
देवी : क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?
लकड़हारा : नहीं! नहीं! यह चाँदी की कुल्हाड़ी है परन्तु मेरी कुल्हाड़ी तो लोहे की है।

देवी : क्या यह तुम्हारी है?
लकड़हारा : हाँ! हाँ! यही मेरी कुल्हाड़ी है।
देवी : तुम बहुत ईमानदार इंसान हो। मैं तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ। तुम्हारी ईमानदारी के लिए मैं तुम्हें इनाम देंगी। (उन्होंने सोने, चाँदी और लोहे की (तीनों) कुल्हाड़ियाँ लकड़हारे को दे दीं।
लकड़हारा : धन्यवाद देवी! आपने मुझे और मेरे परिवार को बचाया है।
